FONDAP Research Center Dynamics of High-Latitude Marine Ecosystems (IDEAL) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in possession of a doctoral degree obtained within the past 5 years, to start his/her research between December of 2016 and March of 2017 (at the most), and for a two-year period.
To carry on these RPs, IDEAL gathers 23 researchers from Austral University, Concepción University and Center of Quaternary Studies (CEQUA-Punta Arenas), from marine and social related sciences, who develop collaborative and interdisciplinary research focused on CMSES of the Antarctic and Sub Antarctic regions of Chile. This includes the study of the effect of specific human internal pressures (e.g. aquaculture expansion) and global biophysical drivers (e.g. Increase in ocean temperature), the dynamics of ecological functions and processes that keep primary productivity and key species under such pressures, the provision of ecosystem services and their link to human livelihood strategies, and CMSES vulnerabilities.
IDEAL looks for candidates , which will be mainly, but not exclusively, inserted in RP5.
Currently, RP5 aims at the interdisciplinary work within the program itself and with the other Center’s RPs, comprising disciplines from the social and natural sciences, coupled with GIS technical expertise.
Broad specific research topics within RP5 include: marine and coastal governance, livelihoods strategies and trajectories, fisheries and ecosystem services mapping, and ecosystem services valuation.
IDEAL invites researches from different disciplines of the natural, social and or engineering sciences to apply, as long as the candidate demonstrates experience in coupled ecological-social systems evaluation and modeling and interdisciplinary work. A high level of knowledge of English and Spanish is also a requirement (spoken and written).
Postdoctoral Researcher
It is expected that the candidate lead: the collaborative construction of conceptual CMSES models based on the biophysical and social information gathered during 2016; the modeling itself; and the preparation of publications derived from his/her work.
For these tasks, it is desirable that the candidate demonstrates interdisciplinary work experience and specific training in complex systems modelling (e.g. agent based models). Additional, and alike all researchers of the Center, the candidate is expected to engage in specific outreach activities (e.g. school scientific fairs). The postdoctoral position will last two years, with the second year being depending upon the candidates’ performance during the first year, which will be evaluated by the RP5 researchers and the principal investigators of the Center. The annual salary is about US$ 30,000. The candidate will reside in Punta Arenas, Magallanes region (IDEAL’s main headquarters) with ample availability to travel to and stay in Valdivia as well.
This call will be open until November 11th and it will be sanctioned within approximately a month. After informed, the candidate is expected to start as soon as possible, and in March 2017 at the most.
Interested persons, please send the following documents to claudia.carcamo@uach.cl indicating in the message “Application to RP5-IDEAL postdoctoral position”:
