We will have a memorable evening with Dr. Pablo Valenzuela, Co-founder and Scientific Director of the Fundación Ciencia & Vida, with the talk «Curiosity as a Transformative Agent: A personal Experience».
In this personal account, Dr. Valenzuela will highlight the fundamental role that curiosity plays in the creation of new knowledge, which then gives rise to products and revolutionary services that impact our society. For the scientist «biotechnology is a science of information, and when there is new information, there are new possibilities».
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Pablo Valenzuela is a biochemist from the University of Chile with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northwestern University USA. He did his postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and held the position of professor in the Department of Biochemistry of that institution.
In 1981, together with W. Rutter and E. Penhoet, he co-founded Chiron Corporation, which a decade later became the second largest biotechnology company in the world. As Vice President of R&D at Chiron, Valenzuela was responsible for the development of biotechnology products and inventor in more than 50 patents in Chile and abroad.
His achievements include the creation of the vaccine against hepatitis B, the discovery of the hepatitis C virus, the elucidation of the genome of the HIV virus and the development of blood screening tests that have made blood transfusion in the world free of many diseases.
He is also the Co-founder and Director of GrupoBios S.A., the first biotechnology company in Chile, and co-founder of Fundación Ciencia & Vida. He is a Board Member of Nova Mineralis, President & CEO of Andes Biotechnologies Inc. and member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences.
In 2002, he was awarded the National Prize for Applied and Technological Sciences of Chile. In 2013, the Bay Bio Life Science Association awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award and, in 2014, he was awarded the UCSF Medal, the highest award given by that university.
